SOCIAL SERVICES/OUTREACH
The Social Services / Outreach department of The Xenia Adult Recreation
and Services Center provides services to area homebound seniors who
need linkage to services appropriate for their needs. The target
population is the aging who lack a sufficient support system, those who
may be isolated and more frail, and have the greatest need for services.
The staff receives and responds to referrals from the community, such as
hospitals, home care agencies, churches, concerned neighbors, families of
a senior and even seniors themselves.
In-home assessments are completed on all cases and we will link the client
to the available resources in the community. The staff in Outreach takes a
Case management approach to clients, by addressing their needs, making
necessary referrals for services and monitoring service delivery with
regular follow up visits monthly and service evaluations yearly. Besides
Case Management we provide services such as: Public benefits: Assisting
w/organizing and/or linkage to various public benefits including HEAP,
AT&T Ohio Lifeline, Medicare Part D, and more.
Other services include:
Essential shopping and delivery in the Xenia area for eligible clients,
prescription pick up and delivery in the Xenia area,
limited medical escort (via Ctr. Van) to medical appointments to provide
support to clients, home delivered meals for Xenia residents? 60/older
that are unable to fix a hot meal, Information & Referral; which provide
info/linkage to resources in the community for seniors, telephone
Reassurance (aka:Telassurance) which is a program where seniors are
linked up to a volunteer phone friend, who will call them regularly to
provide friendship and support. Presentations are made to organizations
such as churches, hospitals or senior groups, with information on XARSC
services and community resources to educate potential clients, families
and service organization staff. The Outreach staff registers out of town
medical transportation clientele. The majority of those we serve live
alone and have limited support systems. They are suffering from many
losses such as limited mobility, vision-hearing problems, severe
arthritis/stroke. We complete regular evaluations,
60-80 per year to monitor the services XARSC provides and the
outcomes (positive changes or benefits) that occur as a result of the
programs.
The Outreach staff includes:
Outreach Department Manager - Angela Glenn
Outreach Caseworker - Ella Sommers
Outreach Caseworker - Jacque Knisley
TRANSPORT
The Xenia Adult Recreation and Services Center has had a
transportation program since 1982. The purpose of the
program is to provide transportation to the aging and
disabled in Greene County and to assist individuals so they
may live independently in their own homes for as long as
possible.
ABOUT OUR VEHICLES
The Xenia Adult Recreation and Services Center has eleven
wheel chair equipped vans. The vans vary in size, there are
small vans that seat only a few people and there are large
vans that seat up to 16 individuals. Some of the vans are
several years old and a couple are only one or two years old!
WHAT DOES THE CENTER OFFER?
Individuals age 50 and above may request local transportation (Xenia to
Xenia) with a $4.00 donation each way. Most out of town transportation
is for individuals age 60 and above who qualify for out of town funding.
Other individuals may be referred through contracts.

MISSION STATEMENT
The Adult Recreation and Services Center is organized to create effective relationships among the aging and in the community. Assuming that older people are capable of continued growth and development, the Center will offer classes in crafts, nutrition, music, dance, exercise, education and creative studies.
We believe that older people have a right to make choices and to be part of the decision making process. Therefore, the Center will provide information to its members concerning legislation and health care choices, which will affect the quality of life of the older person.
We believe that, like all people, older people should have the right to exercise their skills and develop their potential. Therefore, we offer volunteer opportunities for our members.
We believe that, like all people, older people need both access to sources of information and help for personal and family concerns and that they have the desire to remain living independently for as long as possible. Therefore, the Xenia Adult Recreation and Services Center will provide such services as transportation, home-delivered meals, outreach, friendly visiting, grocery shopping, information and referral, counseling, telassurance, and other support services.
The Center believes that, like all people, older people have need for relationships and socialization. Therefore, the Center will offer the opportunity for a congregate meal in a social setting and will offer recreational and educational activities to its members.
This mission is based on the premise that aging is a normal developmental process; that human beings need peers with whom they can interact; that a senior center should seek to create an atmosphere that acknowledges the value of human life and affirms the dignity and self worth of the older adult.
